Venture

The weekend before Thanksgiving, Feed the Hunger had the privilege to partner with Heartline Ministries, Venture Church, and Hickory Ridge High School for a Packathon. More than 600 volunteers came out during three shifts and packed 104,400 meals for hungry children in Haiti.

Often there are people or moments that stand out and touch my heart during a packing event, and this weekend was no different. I want to share a couple of those moments from the weekend with Venture Church that impacted my life.

The first one that stands out happened as I gathered a few of the younger kids together to draw pictures and write messages on the finished boxes of food. One little boy completed his work of art then looked up at me with earnest eyes and asked if I could send this food to his friends because they are hungry. Little did I know that he had just been adopted from an orphanage in China three weeks prior. Hunger was still fresh in his memory as he helped pack these meals for other children that are in the same situation he was in just a few weeks ago.

Another moment of impact from the weekend came by observing a middle-aged couple work together to seal bags. Their teamwork was impeccable as he took the bag of food in his hands, pinched all the air out, placed it under the sealer and said “go” as she pressed down the handle to seal the bag. The incredible thing about this couple is that they are both blind, yet they sealed bags over and over seamlessly for the whole shift.

God can use anyone, anywhere, anytime – no matter their circumstances – to be His hands and feet. Whether you’re 5 or 105, we are called to “look after orphans and widows in their distress” (James 1:27). When we, as the body of Christ, join together we can accomplish something greater than ourselves for the Kingdom of God.

This holiday season may you “let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15)
