Just up the road from Wilmington, NC is Duplin County, where another organization is working to ensure that every school-age child receives enough food. Last week, we were able to send a pallet of beans and rice packets (that’s 8,640 meals!) to help Duplin Christian Outreach Ministries (DCOM) with their backpack program. DCOM is following Jesus’ command to care for those in need (Matthew 25:35, 14:16) by providing weekend and emergency food to students who “fall through the cracks” of the free meal programs at local schools.
Currently, 187 children receive backpacks each week; each backpack contains a message that says, “Given in Jesus’ Name.” Often they will also get a Christian coloring book or a book of puzzles or word games with a Christian theme. The open door provided by the need for food has given DCOM and their partners access to seven public schools in Duplin County. We are grateful to play a small part in their mission to spread the Gospel, and we invite you to pray for the students who receive the backpacks. Ask that God would touch their hearts and bring them to salvation!
