One of my favorite movie scenes is from the 1999 sci-fi thriller, The Matrix. There are many great and applicable lines throughout the movie as it pertains to today’s enslaved and blind American society in general, and the Body of Christ here in particular. In an initial pivotal scene, the central character is offered either a blue pill or a red pill. Swallowing the red pill would in essence wake him up to the “real” world instead of the artificial intelligence controlled reality called the Matrix that he has been living in. Taking the blue pill would keep him in the fake reality. He chose the red pill. You can watch the scene here. I would like to tie that scene into a similar proposal to you.

This post is addressed to Christians, not non-Christians. I don’t expect someone who hasn’t put their faith in Jesus to understand or agree with what I’m about to share. This is addressed to the millions of Americans who call themselves followers of Jesus, but have swallowed the blue pill for years. They are asleep to the “real world”, and instead are living comfortably and sleepily in the self-absorbed, media-saturated, wealthy elite-run and government-controlled reality called America as we know it today.

Many of you are figuratively drugged up and want to stay that way. Let’s face it – we all want our kids to experience the utopian upbringing we thought we had, a life free of worry and pain, one that was worthy of a Norman Rockwell painting. But this seems to come at the expense of ignoring the hunger and murder in our inner cities, muffling the cries of sex slaves, and drowning out the neighbor in need – right here in our own country, much less anywhere else in the world. Like one of the characters in The Matrix, we’d rather take the blue pill because “ignorance is bliss”.

I dare say that most believers here don’t know what exercising faith truly means. I feel I have only grasped it to a small degree compared to the many brothers and sisters in Christ that I have met and serve with around the world. They forsake everything for the sake of sharing the life-saving message of the Gospel. They trust God in ways that shame me. As John the Baptist said about Jesus, I am not even worthy to stoop down and untie the straps of their sandals.

No matter which pill you’ve taken, understand this: the status quo in America will end soon without widespread repentance and revival. God is going to judge this nation, starting with the church, because we have forsaken Him. You can receive this warning however you’d like. Men and women of God whom I greatly admire and whom diligently seek the Lord, believe that this judgment is coming soon to America. We are on the doorstep now. Could God tarry in His judgment? Absolutely. Do I see any indication yet that He will? No.
