After the Christmas holidays and the beginning of a new year, the dreaded ‘S’ word starts swirling around every household. Parents are pushing it and kids are dreading it. The early morning rush to get out the door on time commences. Lunches are packed, teeth are brushed, jackets, hats, and gloves are thrown on, and then out the door we go for another six months of school! It has begun! It may not be like this in your house but it is in mine!
Last week when I returned to the office after the holidays and began the morning rush, I received this wonderful short video from one of our partners, Daylight Children’s Center and School (DCC) in Kenya. I first visited DCC in 2009 and quickly fell in love with the children. Daylight is located at the edge of the nomadic lands, where people roam in search of food and water for their cattle. Here, animals are both food and currency, and it is because of this that there is great tribal fighting. Many families are destroyed and children killed because of the need for food and water for the cattle.
Daylight Children’s Center and School is a wonderful place where children come and receive the love of Christ in a safe environment. Most of the children are orphans; their parents have been killed because of the tribal fighting. They first come to the school injured, frightened, and in many cases starving because of the fighting, but they are quickly embraced by the love of the other students, staff, and caregivers at the center.
DCC has transformed the lives of children with the love of Christ. The wonderful video that I received was filmed last week on their first day of school after the Christmas holidays. They are excited to be back at school and proclaiming the goodness of marching in the light of God. Those are the words that they are singing over and over again in the video in English and Swahili, “We are marching in the light of God”.
As we resume our morning rush, getting our children ready for school and getting ourselves ready for work, remember the children at Daylight Children’s Center and School singing and marching. May we also sing and march in His light each day!
